Last Name:
Jahan

Ayiah combines art, film making and social activism to produce work that directly impacts on local communities through exploring diverse issues such as crime and perceptions of identity.

Ayiah Jahan graduated with a MA Independent Film Video and New Screen Media degree from UeL in 2005.

Her film A Journey Through Tottenham is a reflection from seven people who live in Tottenham about their identity and what it feels like to live in a multi-cultural community.

This film reflects Ayiahs interest in community, the links within and between communities and her belief that differences in culture, religion and traditions are powerful resources that can enrich our lives.

Ayiahs practice focuses on using art mediums as tools for community engagement, dialogue and cohesion. In a project commissioned by Camden Drug Action Team Ayiah worked with residents in a homeless hostel and residents on an estate in Covent Garden where the two groups of participants communicated via artwork and video to express to each other feelings around drugs and crime.

Ayiah also works with regeneration projects where digital video is used as part of the consultation process between young people and the management board allowing young people to put forward their requests in the form of videos which can be screened at relevant meetings.

Ayiahs latest project is a short film about the photographer Isabelle Merminod and her work with children and families who have been detained in immigration centres.
